Nintendo Wii (Free with Selected Mobile Phone Deals)
If you are looking to buy something special for the kids to play with this year at Christmas then you can’t go far wrong with a Nintendo Wii. The Wii has caused a lot of stir since its release in 2006 because of its revolutionary approach to gaming through its “Wii Remote” controller. This was the first mainstream console to use motion sensing technology, but since then the other two major consoles have come up with their own response. So is the Wii still a good buy or are you better off going with one of its competitors?
Advantages of the Nintendo Wii
The main selling point of the Wii is the Wii remote controller. This has the ability to detect where it is in 3D space meaning that you can theoretically control the on screen game by just moving your arms. Compared with the usual controls of a gaming console this is much easier and more accessible to people who don’t usually play games. However when the Wii was first release the remote was criticised because it doesn’t quite have the accuracy that many people were expecting. It still does a good job but don’t expect to be able to control a 3D sword fight with perfect recognition of your movements for example.
With that said, recently Nintendo released an add-on for the Wii remote called the Wii Motion Plus which increases the accuracy of the remote greatly. However you will have to buy an individual Motion plus unit for each controller that you have.
Other advantages of the Nintendo Wii include its COnnecct24 system which allows the Wii to receive updates and messages even when in standby mode and also the wide range of more accessible games for children and adults who are big gamers.
Unlike the newest models of the PS3 the Wii is also compatible with Gamecube games and can also use Gamecube controllers f you feel the need to play and older game.
The price is also a big advantage as it is cheaper than the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3. When the Wii was first released demand was so high that it was almost impossible to get your hands on one but luckily that isn’t the case anymore.
Disadvantages of the Nintendo Wii
Even though the Wii was revolutionary when it first came out, there have been lots of disappointed fans who claim that the console hasn’t lived up to expectations. This isn’t down to the console itself on the whole but the fact that the majority of the games are so called “mini game compilations” that don’t provide an in depth and long term gaming experience. There are some notable exceptions however such as Mario Galaxy and the newest Zelda game for the Wii, but many feel that the 3rd party developers have let the console down by not putting enough effort into creating games for the hardcore gamer.
Another downside of the Wii is that it has no HD support and its graphics capabilities are considerably less than its nearest rivals. For most people this isn’t a problem as the graphics on the Wii in general aren’t terrible, they just aren’t as realistic as the Xbox 360 for example.
